7 Ways You Can Have a Successful Garage Sale

Fall weather lends itself very well to having a garage sale. If you dread the thoughts of all of the work, think about how much better you‘ll feel when your Uncle Nathaniel’s bullhorn and all of the other clutter you’ve accumulated are gone. Better still, you‘ll have a few extra dollars in your pocket to spend. Follow Orlando garage floors company’s, Garage Design Works, seven ways to have a successful garage sale.

  • Ensure you have enough items for your garage sale. Declutter your home. Go room-by-room and collect clothes you no longer wear, old bed and bath linens, electronics equipment, tools, and toys you no longer use. If you haven’t used it in two years, it should go.
  • Schedule your garage sale for an early Saturday morning to avoid the afternoon heat and while the garage sale crowd is still eager to purchase. Use classified ads in your local newspaper or online to advertise your upcoming sale at least two to three days in advance of the date. Be clear about the location, start and end times, as well as the types of items you are selling.
  • A few days before the sale, organize your sale items. Include price tags if you don’t want to continually answer, “How much is this?”
  • The night before the sale, set up tables and clothing racks in your garage and place your items by category on the tables for easy viewing.  If someone is looking for used toys, they’ll go right to that section.
  • Early on the morning of your sale, place signage in your neighborhood, if permitted, to direct people to your garage sale.
  • Make sure you have some plastic or paper bags on hand for your customers to store their purchased items.
  • Ensure you have plenty of change in different denominations. Use an apron with pockets or a handbag that ties around your waist to store your money and change. If you still have items to sell an hour before you close, consider lowering your prices on them.

Plan to have an annual garage sale to control the growing clutter in your home. Designate a large box in your home as the “Decluttering Box”. Throughout the year, toss those items you no longer need or use into the box. You’ll be amazed at how much you can collect in a year. Have a rule that when you purchase something new, something you don’t need has to go.
