Choosing The Best Air Conditioning for Your Garage

There are a variety of ways to cool your garage. Choosing the best type of air conditioning for your garage can be a challenge. There is much to consider, from the size of the unit to how often you are in the garage. Luckily, we’ve developed a guide to help you determine which one is best for you!

Ductless
Ductless HVAC systems, also called mini-split systems, are an energy-efficient and consistent way to cool your garage — and oftentimes considered the best method. Typically, you would wall-mount the unit, which will work with an outside compressor. Note that although this is a top-of-the-line product, it’s also the most expensive choice. It lasts longer than most home units and can become a permanent fixture. Plus, it cools and heats, runs quietly, and requires a simple installation with minimal risk, compared to other methods.

Central
A central AC unit cools the entire home evenly, unlike window systems that cool only a specific area. If you are a homeowner with hot air all year long, the central unit may be the one for you. A major pro is the fact that it keeps the air consistent everywhere, so you don’t have to worry about a separate unit for your garage. To keep your central air system working properly, however, regular maintenance is required. You’ll have to replace filters regularly, keep the parts clean from debris, and sometimes call in an HVAC professional. Because there are so many components to the system, issues can arise that you won’t be able to handle yourself. With everything that goes into a central unit, you are looking at a higher energy bill.

Window
The window air conditioner is the most popular type for a garage because it’s inexpensive to purchase and operate. Unlike a ductless air conditioner which only requires drilling a small hole, adding a window air conditioner requires cutting a large hole in the wall. It cools only a certain amount of space, typically the room it’s in, but can be effective if placed properly. Although you can install a window unit yourself, we recommend calling a professional for installation. Sometimes window units can actually fall out of the window, so it’s best to have support from an expert. Keep in mind, a window unit is the least expensive option, but is also considered the most unsightly and can be a security and a health risk. If you have allergies or asthma, this product doesn’t have the best filtration.
