It’s hard to believe that it’s that time already–“back to school season” is officially here! Though it may not be the first room you think of when August rolls around, your garage needs to be prepared when you send your kids back to school.
First and foremost, you need room to comfortably park your car for easy access–especially if you’re the carpool parent this year! When kids are tired in the morning or had a rough day at school, they’re prone to open car doors quickly. Store any clutter in overhead bins and cabinets to leave plenty of walking room and adequate car-door-swinging room to prevent any damage to your vehicle.
Secondly, most of your kids’ athletic gear is probably stashed in the garage. Pull it out, dust it off, and make sure all balls are inflated and all padding and helmets still fit properly. Since your kids will probably be using their athletic equipment more often during the school year, consider adding an easily-accessed space for it on your wall storage system. If you install the system this year, then you won’t have to fight with unorganize or misplaced sporting goods next year. Organizing your garage could also turn into a money-making venture if you find old sporting equipment that is too small or that your kids no longer need. Keep some items for garage sales, and donate or throw out the rest.
Finally, create a place for the young ones to store their shoes. Throw out, donate, or sell any old pairs, and make sure the designated place allows you to keep dirty shoes out of your home. A well-placed wall system will provide plenty of room for unused shoes. You can even hang another, much smaller, wall system for dirty shoes or muddy cleats.
