Garage Design Works believes in its epoxy floor coatings and is happy to debunk six myths. Don’t just take it from us — take it from our happy customers who submitted positive truths about these spectacular floorings.

Myth #1: Very Expensive
Installing your own floors is a challenging task. There are tools involved that the average person may not be able to use safely. If you don’t properly prepare the floors, it can lead to more problems and wasted money. Having the job done professionally will provide years of use without any problems — and you get to save money!

Myth #2: They Are All the Same
Home improvement stores sell garage epoxy floor coating products, but they are entirely inferior to professionally-installed products. A good product will be durable, enabling your floor to stand up to the impact of cars, abrasion from walking over it, and prevent fading or yellowing from the sun. Professional installers are trained on what to do — and what not to do — when it comes to proper application of this specialized service.

Myth #3: Epoxy is Just Heavy Paint
People have claimed that epoxy is just heavier paint. Epoxy and paint are two very different things. Epoxy is actually a much more substantial material. It contains special hardeners and resins, making it more durable than paint. Not only is it thicker than paint, it is also UV-, chemical-, and abrasion-resistant.

Myth #4: Only Clean Before Installation
To prepare the floor, it usually needs to be mechanically diamond ground or lightly shot-blasted. This process is done to remove loose cement paste and surface contaminants, to create a rough service that enables the epoxy to adhere better to the floor. Acid etching in DIY products doesn’t yield the results that grinding or shot-blasting gives.

Myth #5: Updating Applications Yearly
Properly installed epoxy doesn’t require repeat applications every one to three years. This is only true if you use the DIY lots from home improvement stores, don’t prep the floor correctly, or don’t apply the coating properly. Generally, a garage floor that has been professionally epoxied and has an additional protective layer of urethane will give homeowners anywhere between 10 to 20 years of service.

Myth #6: Epoxy Can’t Withstand Hot Tires
If you use an inferior product or don’t prep the floor properly, you will incur hot-tire lift off. The heat from your tires can break the bond of the paint, which then adheres to your tires. Due to our strict surface prep requirements and superior coating systems, hot tire lift-off is not an issue. Before we apply the floor coating, we prep your garage floor with our state-of-the-art equipment, which most contractors don’t do. As a result, you get a beautifully finished floor that does not succumb to hot tire lift-off!
